Mother's 114th Birthday

Good Morning Merry Sunshine!

Baby Kathryn 1911

That is what my mother would say to me as her morning greeting,
especially if I had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

"Good Morning Merry Sunshine".
Oh how that irritated me as I got older.
I feel sad thinking about that now...

I also remember a favorite song of hers, "You Are My Sunshine".
That was the first song I learned to play on the electric organ.

Thank goodness it wasn't the accordion...
Like my brother Billy!

Billy

She wanted her children to be happy.
I know she rarely was. Life had been difficult for her.
Losing her mother at just 13 and not being able to go off to college,
as her two siblings had.  She was a child of the Great Depression.

Kathryn

Mother's father had lost a leg in a rollover accident.
A wagon rollover. The mule pulling the wagon lay on its side
(in the ditch for hours) and didn't move until help came.
If it had moved it would have killed my grandfather.

My mother, aunt, and uncle.

After that, my grandmother went back to college and got another degree so she could support her family. She became one of the very first female doctors in Washington State. That was a real accomplishment (for a woman) at the turn of the century.

Dr. Sarah Gibson

Her career didn't last long. She died after a car accident
(no seat belts back then).
She was sent into surgery and never came out.

My mother found out at school... on her first day of 8th grade.
Not a good start to the new school year.
The picture below shows her a few years later with her
very stylish "Flapper" hairdo.

Kathryn age 16

Mother didn't get to go to college as her brother and sister had.
The Depression had made that impossible.
She worked and put herself through nursing school.
That was not her choice, but what was available.

I am sad to say I have no idea what she had aspired to be.
I do know that she was artistic and loved poetry.

Kathryn at Nursing School Graduation

Mother was born in 1911.
She had me late in life. A surprise at 40.
I think maybe it was also a slight embarrassment.

She was a R.N. and worked on the maternity ward.
She worked her shift the day I was born. I think she needed to
as she was working full time to help support the family.

She did the best she could...

She would have been 114 years old today.
She died at 97.

Kathryn age 97

I hesitate somewhat to show this last picture.
Mother was slightly vain about her looks.
Saddened by the fact that she lost her beauty early on.
That's what a hard life can do to you.

Happy Birthday, Mother.

It was hard, but I did love you.

In The Summertime ~ Music Video

We all LOVE Summer!

But it is time to say farewell...
unless you live in the Southern
Hemisphere,
as my blogging buddy Natasha.

In the land of OZ,
Summer is on it's way...
while for me it's on it's way out.

Today, for her Pinning and Singing meme,
I would like to share a good old favorite summer
time song by Mungo Jerry.

This music video is full of lovely flower pictures
so I won't be showing any pinning this time.
The video is HTTPS secure.

ENJOY!

Please take a few minutes to enjoy some
other party participants over at

Have a great Labor Day weekend,
and of course be SAFE!

XOXO

in awhile then continue on...
Get your tissue ready!

I have included the poem
The Rainbow Bridge,
and I WILL REMEMBER YOU
sung by Sarah McLachlan.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Please let me know if this touched you.

Words Set to Music

This is my very first time to join in on
Jenny's Saturday Centus.

This week the prompt is
"You are my sunshine".
We can add up to fifty words more.

I have no idea what I'm doing,
but if BJ from Sweet Nothings can do it, so can I ;)

You are my sunshine was a favorite song of my Mother's.
She would have been 100 years old this year and I wrote
a post about her life growing up.

I like to play it now and then, just because...

(This is to read as if you were singing the song)

You are my sunshine,
my only sunshine.
I had to play this...
for my mom.

I never liked to,
but always had to.
How I wish...
I could do...
that today!

Please go take a peak at this special post
I wrote about her on her 100th birthday.
I also included a youtube
song just for her.

And then...
Why not go on over to Jenny's
and try your hand at this fun meme :)

I am also linking up to Natasha's
Pinning and Singing Party.

Waltzing Matilda

Today I am joining Natasha at
5 MINUTES JUST FOR ME
all the way "down" in Australia!

She is hosting a great new blog party that
combines "pinning" and music.

Have you ever been to Australia?

Today I want to share a song about Australia.
One that most everyone has heard before.
But do you know the meaning of it?

Here are some "Aussie" words translated:
swagman:  a romanticised "hobo" figure.
swag: a bundle of his belongings.
Matilda: a romantic term for a swagman's bundle.
Waltzing Matilda:  they danced with their swags.
billy:  a can for boiling water.
coolibah tree:  a kind of eucalyptus tree.
jumbuck:  a sheep.
billy: a can for boiling water.
tucker bag: a bag for carrying food ("tucker").
I hope that you will enjoy the song more,
now that you know what these words mean.
Waltzing Matilda

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
"Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
"Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"

Along came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?".

Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three,
"Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?"
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
"Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?",
"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?".

Up jumped the swagman, leapt into the billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive," said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong,
"Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong,
"Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"

Thank you for your visit today.
Be sure to go say 'Hi" to Natasha.

Sunday Song Party

I have a dear friend in Australia who is
hosting a Sunday Song linky party.
{Her link will be at the end of this post}

Have you ever been so lucky as to have
visited the wonders of Australia!

I love to visit her blog and see how the
"other half " of the world lives.
{Maybe she thinks the same about the USA}

They are in the middle of Winter right now.
So of course they will be celebrating Christmas
during their Summer. Frosty has NO chance there!

Be sure to take a visit "Down Under" and see what
she is up to. I especially liked her Sunday Song
post today... and her featured song.

Suitcases sung by Dara McLean.

OH! But Wait!

Here is my contribution for her party.

It's a  "Song and Dance"
to promote my NEW blog party!!!
(turn on the sound then click here)

I hope you get a chuckle out of me looking foolish.
Can you tell which one is me?!

Please go here to learn about the party.
I'm going to need a little help getting this party
"hoppening".

XOXO
Have a great weekend!
